Action Will Take Place In Front of Sen. Baldwin’s Milwaukee Office on Thursday, 10/28

(STATEWIDE – WI) – With just days remaining before Speaker Pelosi’s October 31st deadline to pass the Build Back Better reconciliation bill, Voces de la Frontera and allies are organizing a public protest this Thursday, October 28 at 4:00 p.m. CST outside of  Senator Tammy Baldwin’s Milwaukee office. As part of a national movement, Wisconsin immigrant essential workers, youth and allies are continuing to increase pressure on Congressional Democrats and Vice President Harris to disregard the biased advice from the Senate Parliamentarian and use their majority power to deliver on their promise to pass a path to citizenship this year.

This action will take place after thousands of immigrant essential workers, small business owners and students from across Wisconsin closed their businesses, walked off the job and out of school to participate in a Day Without Latinxs and Immigrants general strike and march in Milwaukee earlier this month. These actions in Wisconsin are connected to actions organized by immigrant rights groups across the country leading up to the October 31 deadline.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera, said: “Senator Baldwin and Democrats in the House must champion this issue and urge President Biden, Vice President Harris and their Democratic colleagues in the U.S. Senate to deliver a path to citizenship by the October 31st deadline. This means the Vice President disregarding the Senate Parliamentarian’s advice and Democrats using their majority power to pass citizenship this year. There can be no economic recovery from the pandemic that excludes immigrant essential workers and their families.  Latinxs, immigrants and multiracial youth registered, voted and encouraged others to vote on the promise of citizenship this year.  Democrats cannot take these votes for granted in 2022 if their legacy is a legacy of betrayal.”

WHATEmergency Action: Citizenship Now! – A rally and picket to increase pressure on Democrats in the U.S. Senate and Vice President Harris to disregard the arbitrary advice from the Senate Parliamentarian and use their majority power to pass a path to citizenship this year.

WHEN: Thursday, October 28th at 4:00 p.m. CST

WHERE: Outside the office of U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, 633 W. Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI

The action will also be streamed via Facebook live at facebook.com/VocesdelaFronteraWI.

WHY: On the campaign trail in 2020, Vice President Harris met with a group of immigrant essential workers in Wisconsin and promised them that the Biden administration would pass a path to citizenship their first year in office. Since getting elected, immigrant essential workers, their families and allies continue to pressure Vice President Harris and her Democratic colleagues in Congress to fulfill this promise. Congressional Democrats in both houses passed the Build Back Better reconciliation bill with $107 billion for a path to citizenship, but the Senate Parliamentarian, an unelected attorney, advised that citizenship not be included in the bill. Democrats have the power to disregard the Senate Parliamentarian’s advice and keep funding for citizenship in the budget bill.
