MADISON – State Representative Tony Kurtz (R-Wonewoc) released the weekly radio address on behalf of Wisconsin Legislative Republicans.

Republicans are continuing to invest in Wisconsin’s veterans. I’m Representative Tony Kurtz from Wonewoc.

As a veteran, I’m very passionate about supporting those who served the nation in defense of our freedom. I’m proud that several good measures passed the Joint Finance Committee and will be voted on by the full legislature as part of the state budget.

First, we increased funding for veteran suicide prevention. Every day in the United States,
approximately 20 veterans take their own lives. The pandemic only made things worse for those already struggling and the demand for suicide prevention services grew. This additional funding will allow us to give proper assistance to veterans in need of support.

The committee also provided ten million dollars for Wisconsin’s Veterans Homes to help plan and prepare for future disasters. Long-term care facilities were hit particularly hard by COVID-19, and veteran’s homes were no different. These additional funds will help make sure these critical services are better prepared to handle another pandemic or natural disaster.

We can never thank our veterans enough for their service and sacrifice, but it’s our duty to
support them and I’m proud to be able to be a part of this effort to do so.
