Gov. Evers Signs Bipartisan Budget, Including One of the Largest Tax Cuts in Wisconsin History

Evers’ Budget Also Restores Two-thirds Funding Commitment to Public Schools and Additional Action Secures $100 Million in Federal Funds for Education

MADISON, Wis. — Today, Gov. Tony Evers signed into law a historic, bipartisan budget bill that includes a massive tax break for working families, investments in infrastructure, broadband, and public education, and support for veterans. Gov. Evers also announced an additional $100 million in funding for Wisconsin’s public schools to support students across the state.

Thanks to the governor’s steady leadership during the pandemic, Wisconsin is able to take bold action to continue its economic recovery. Evers’ budget includes:

  • Historic Surplus: Beginning the fiscal year with a $2.39 billion general fund surplus, the largest in state history.
  • Tax Relief: $2.6 billion in tax relief for Wisconsin families, one of the largest tax cuts in Wisconsin history, newly providing relief to 1.6 million taxpayers.
  • Public School Funding: $685 million in new aid to schools, which will restore the state’s two-thirds funding commitment for the first time in two decades.
  • Broadband Expansion: $129 million to expand broadband access to even more homes and small businesses.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Nellie Sires released the following statement:

“Thanks to Governor Evers’ leadership, we have a historic opportunity to deliver for families, small businesses, and communities across the state. When our economy and working families need help the most, Governor Evers is delivering on his promise and providing historic tax relief to more than 1.6 million Wisconsinites. That’s in addition to the more than $2 billion in tax relief the governor has already secured – including a $450 million tax cut earlier this year to help small businesses and lower-income families bounce back.

“The governor is also making sure Wisconsin students and teachers have the support they need. Because of his leadership, the budget directs $685 million in additional funds to education, and for the first time in two decades, we will finally hit our two-thirds funding commitment to public schools. The governor is committed to ensuring Wisconsin students, teachers, and parents have well-funded public schools, regardless of their zip code.

“The bipartisan support for this budget shows Governor Evers’ commitment to finding solutions to the challenges facing our state. Now, we have the opportunity to do even more to move Wisconsin forward. We’re confident that Governor Evers’ steady leadership and bold solutions will make sure Wisconsin bounces back stronger than ever before.”
