MADISON, Wis. — Today, Governor Tony Evers defended access to reproductive health care with his veto pen. The bills, passed by Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly, are a part of a national effort to ban abortion and interfere with a person’s ability to make their own health care decisions. Gov. Tony Evers has always fought for access to health care, including reproductive rights, underscoring the importance of re-electing the Democratic governor in 2022.
Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:
“Thank you, Governor Evers, for defending Wisconsinites’ freedom to make their own most intimate health care decisions. Abortion is health care. Bills like these, proposed by Wisconsin Republicans, insert politics into some of the most deeply personal moments in a family’s life, and harm those seeking care. Pregnant people and their families, not politicians, should make their personal health care decisions.
“Republicans are advancing extreme, divisive laws to advance their scorched-earth political agenda. Wisconsin has seen an onslaught in attempts to pass restrictive abortion laws in recent years. Though abortion remains safe and legal in our state, laws like this show just how tenuous access to this essential care is. Without a Democratic governor to block these attacks, Republicans would be able to pass draconian abortion laws like they have in states like Texas and Mississippi, and strip Wisconsinites’ access to health care.
“Laws like this have a disproportionate impact on people who already struggle to access health care — including Black, Latino, and Indigenous people, those with low incomes, and people in rural areas. Everyone — regardless of race, income, insurance status, or zip code — deserves access to health care. The stakes are high in 2022 — Gov. Tony Evers is the last line of defense against Wisconsin Republicans’ attacks on reproductive health care.”
