MADISON, Wis. — Rep. Mike Gallagher proved to be the ultimate party loyalist today, voting against a commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection that resulted in the deaths of five people, including a Capitol Police officer, spurred by Republicans’ lies about the 2020 election. The commission aims to prevent future national security threats and investigate the factors that led to the attack, including the “Stop the Steal” rally hosted by the Trump campaign.

No matter how he tries to spin it, Gallagher voted against the bipartisan commission solely for the sake of politics. Republicans fear the commission will draw more attention to their role in instigating the violence and spreading lies about democracy, as well as anger Donald Trump and his base. National security experts have criticized Republicans for putting politics ahead of democracy and the safety of our nation.

Gallagher has consistently shown he will always choose his political career over the needs of Wisconsinites, even if it means siding with the most extreme wing of his party. Just last week, Gallagher voted to oust Liz Cheney for her refusal to spread lies about the 2020 election, flip flopping to appease Republican leaders. He also put his party ahead of Wisconsinites by voting against federal aid and stimulus checks.

“Regardless of whatever excuse he offers, Mike Gallagher voted against this bipartisan commission solely for the sake of politics and to prove his undying loyalty to the extreme wing of the GOP,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Kayla Anderson. “Republicans like Gallagher fear this commission will expose their role in instigating the violent attack, and would rather play politics than protect our country. Once again, Gallagher has shown Wisconsinites he lacks moral courage and is willing to put his political career ahead of democracy and national security.”
