Madison Wis. — This weekend, the Wisconsin Republican Party held their 2021 state convention, a weekend ripe with debunked conspiracy theories, outright lies, and Republican officials showing just how detached they are from reality. At the helm of this sinking ship was failed candidate Derrick Van Orden, a far-right extremist who made his name by rallying with the Jan. 6 insurrectionists at the U.S. Capitol, making anti-Semitic slurs, and even touting his own history of sexual harassment and abuse of female military officers.

TL;DR — The Wisconsin GOP has completely abandoned the working people of Wisconsin to bow down to their wealthy donors and corporate backers.

In response, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:

“I’d like to thank the Republican Party of Wisconsin for what amounted to a day-long infomercial for voting against the GOP. What we saw at this weekend’s convention demonstrates their refusal to focus on the issues that actually matter to working Wisconsin families, and their obsession with rigging the rules to benefit themselves.

“It’s shameful that the Wisconsin GOP continues to do whatever they can to destroy trust in elections and make it harder for people to cast a ballot. If Wisconsin Republicans intend to focus on dividing the country through policies of oppression, corporate greed, and cruelty, they’ll have a hard time selling their failed ‘agenda’ to voters who’ve seen that President Biden, Gov. Evers, and Democrats in Congress are delivering for communities across the state.

“Next year, Wisconsin voters will re-elect Governor Evers and Democrats up and down the ballot—and hold Republicans like Senator Ron Johnson accountable for abandoning the interests of working families.

“Wisconsin was proudly blue in the 2020 election and, if this weekend’s grotesque display of right-wing extremism is all the GOP has to offer, it will remain blue in 2022.”
