Madison Wis. — As the Wisconsin Republican Party prepares for their state convention this weekend, it’s clear that the Wisconsin GOP has never been more out of touch with Wisconsinites. To recap:
- Wisconsin Republican lawmakers have wasted $8.5 million of taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits and want to spend even more to litigate partisan legislative maps
- Wisconsin Republicans refused to expand BadgerCare, rejecting $1.6 billion, which Gov. Evers had planned to invest in much-needed economic development projects
- Continuing the legacy of Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch, Wisconsin Republicans have consistently refused to support public schools, even risking $2.3 billion in federal funding and earning harsh criticism from local school leaders
- Wisconsin Republicans continue their relentless attacks on voting rights, despite pushback from disability advocates
- Wisconsin Republicans ditched their constituents to go to the Arizona election review circus, furthering false claims of election fraud and endangering future elections
- Republicans in Congress unanimously voted against $5 billion in critical pandemic relief for Wisconsin and $1,400 checks that went to 3.8 million Wisconsinites
- In the Senate, Ron Johnson has made it his mission to repeal the Affordable Care Act, despite the fact nearly 200,000 Wisconsinites get health coverage through the marketplace and 2.4 million Wisconsinites are living with a pre-existing condition
- Johnson helped craft Trump’s tax bill to benefit his company, but when it came to supporting Wisconsin families Johnson, and other Wisconsin Republicans, voted against pandemic relief, investing in workers, and has stated he doesn’t support the child-care tax credit.
Wisconsin Republicans are likely to hear from soon-to-be announced candidate for governor Rebecca Kleefisch, who is committed to dismantling the progress our state has made under Gov. Evers. Kleefisch was at the heart of some of the most disastrous policy decisions in Wisconsin’s history, including the failed Foxconn agreement and years of attacks on public schools that left students without the resources they needed to succeed.
Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:
“Wisconsinites are tired of the toxicity of the Wisconsin Republican Party. From derailing federal funding for public education to seeding doubt in the integrity of our elections to trying to rip health care away from Wisconsinites, the Republican Party of Wisconsin continues to put their own political self-interests over the lives of working families in Wisconsin. Wisconsinites are tired of the political circus starring Senator Ron Johnson, Rebecca Kleefisch, and Robin Vos, and, come 2022, will hold them accountable at the polls. Until then, Wisconsin Democrats and Gov. Tony Evers will continue to be a voice for working families across the state, and continue to advocate for policies that better the lives of Wisconsinites.”
