[Madison, WI] – Today, Tony Evers vetoed six election integrity bills put forward by Republicans in the state Legislature, which would have strengthened election integrity and increased transparency in Wisconsin’s electoral process. The Republican Party of Wisconsin released the following statement from Executive Director Mark Jefferson:
“All state elected officials, regardless of party, should want Wisconsinites to feel confident in the results of our elections. It’s absurd that Tony Evers is fundamentally unwilling to engage on the issue of election integrity while Wisconsinites across the state seek commonsense reforms to strengthen voter confidence and prevent fraud.
“Republicans want to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat. Tony Evers’ performative veto is just more of the same partisan theatrics that Democrats have used in their quest to hinder election integrity across the country. We are confident that our elected Republicans will continue to fight to ensure our elections are free, fair, and secure, despite Evers’ unwillingness to help.”
Among the bills Evers vetoed today was SB 204, which would have prevented bad actors from abusing “indefinitely confined” status to avoid showing photo ID. After clerks in Dane and Milwaukee counties illegally encouraged voters to mark themselves as “indefinitely confined” in order to avoid voting in person in the spring of 2020, the number of “indefinitely confined” voters ballooned from just over 50,000 in March 2020 to nearly 250,000 by November’s Election Day. The Republican Party of Wisconsin successfully sued the clerks, obtaining a favorable decision by the Wisconsin state Supreme Court.
