Hi, this is State Representative Gary Hebl with this week’s Democratic radio address.

I’m an eternal optimist. I believe that the vast majority of people in our state and our country are good people who simply want to live their lives in peace and that the people in this country that are divisive are an extremely loud, extremely small minority. Unfortunately, many of the people that make up that minority are elected officials, and much of what we read on social media and in the press can make staying optimistic difficult.

I keep hoping that elected officials will tamp down the divisive rhetoric, stop questioning the motives of those we disagree with, and focus on the issues that are important to the people we represent. There are issues that most of Wisconsinites agree on, and it is up to elected officials to put the interest of the state over the interest of their political party.

So as we head into the November election, I hope you’ll join me in an effort to cut through all the negativity. I’m hopeful we can put aside the tired old rhetoric, and focus on what people need. Less talk about past elections and more talk about jobs, roads, and schools. Less blame, and more ideas for how to make life better for everybody going forward.

It is inevitable that we will have many disagreements. But I continue to believe that we can find a way to talk about the issues that are important issues without vitriol. My Democratic colleagues and I, like Governor Evers, are ready and willing to collaborate with the Republicans who control the legislature. We will continue to seek out compromises because we believe that working together is the best way to get things done for the people of this great state.

Thank You.
