MADISON – The ACLU of Wisconsin issued a statement today thanking Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers for vetoing an anti-protest bill Thursday afternoon.

Melinda Brennan, the Executive Director of the ACLU of Wisconsin, said the following:

“We thank Gov. Evers for taking action and vetoing Senate Bill 296, a piece of anti-protest legislation that could have criminalized various aspects of lawful assembly. The bill would have undermined Wisconsinites’ freedom to express themselves through protest, and Gov. Evers’ choice to reject it has ensured that this fundamental constitutional right is protected

We would also like to express our gratitude to the many groups and individuals who came together to speak out and organize against this legislation.”
