I would like to thank my colleagues for today’s vote of confidence in selecting me as the next President of the Common Council. That I am the first Latino to hold this title is not lost on me, and I am grateful for this opportunity. I did not get here alone, and I look forward to my time as president being defined by hope, collaboration and building a great future for our city. As a body, the Council is always stronger when we work together, and that is true now more than ever.
As the child of Puerto Rican immigrants and a lifelong resident of the near south side, I know firsthand the divisions that still exist in our community. As Council President, I will prioritize uniting our city as we strive to create an inclusive community that is welcoming and beneficial to all residents. Our constituents deserve nothing less.
We must continue to address the issues of violence, fiscal sustainability, and neighborhood development, among other issues, and as President I am willing to work with anyone who has ideas about how to build a better Milwaukee.
Our city has an immense opportunity before it. As Milwaukee has changed over time, so too has its leadership. As part of this new leadership, I am looking forward to working every day to ensure that as a city we are on the path to greater success and prosperity.
Me gustaría agradecer a mis colegas por el voto de confianza de hoy al seleccionarme como el próximo presidente del Concejo Común. Que soy el primer latino en tener este título no se me escapa, y estoy agradecido por esta oportunidad. No llegué aquí solo y espero que mi tiempo como presidente se defina por la esperanza, la colaboración y la formación de un gran futuro para nuestra ciudad. Como organismo, el Concejo siempre es más fuerte cuando trabajamos juntos, y eso es cierto ahora más que nunca.
Como hijo de inmigrantes puertorriqueños y residente de toda la vida del lado sur cercano, sé de primera mano las divisiones que aún existen en nuestra comunidad. Como Presidente del Concejo, daré prioridad a unir a nuestra ciudad mientras nos esforzamos por crear una comunidad inclusiva que sea amable y beneficiosa para todos los residentes. Nuestros electores no merecen menos.
Debemos continuar abordando los problemas de violencia, sostenibilidad fiscal y desarrollo de vecindarios, entre otros, y como presidente estoy dispuesto a trabajar con cualquiera que tenga ideas sobre cómo construir un mejor Milwaukee.
Nuestra ciudad tiene ante sí una inmensa oportunidad. Así como Milwaukee ha cambiado con el tiempo, también lo ha hecho su liderazgo. Como parte de este nuevo liderazgo, espero trabajar todos los días para garantizar que, como ciudad, estemos en el camino hacia un mayor éxito y prosperidad.
