According to a new report from HuffPost, U.S. Senate Republicans have no desire to work with Democrats to pass affordable child care, even after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — a decision “that will likely lead to more births and parental hardship” while disproportionately impacting “lower-income households and people of color.”
One of those Senators is Wisconsin’s own Ron Johnson.
Despite claiming to represent “family values,” Johnson has backed abortion bans with no exception for rape or incest, while also opposing plans that lower child care costs:
-
Johnson repeatedly asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and praised the GOP SCOTUS appointees’ decision, calling it “a really good decision” and “the correct decision.” In a May interview, Johnson also argued that there should be no abortions in Wisconsin.
-
Meanwhile, Johnson voted against a tax cut for working families and stressed that he is “happy to defend” his remark that he’s “never really felt it was society’s responsibility” to lower child care costs. On the campaign trail, Johnson has doubled and tripled down on his out-of-touch views.
-
But it should be no surprise that the senator who fought to slash his biggest billionaire donors’ taxes also opposed a Child Tax Credit that lowered costs for 36 million families.
Johnson is responsible for denying parents affordable child care and will be responsible for the government deciding medical decisions over women’s bodies.
