MILWAUKEE (April 1, 2022) – Over 100 firefighters will take thousands of steps in their 50-pound gear in the American Lung Association in Wisconsin’s Anthem Firefighter Challenge at the Fight For Air Climb at American Family Field on April 9, 2022.

“This will be my 14th time participating in the Anthem Firefighter Challenge,” said Fire Chief Aaron Lipski of the Milwaukee Fire Department. “I love taking part in the Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb event year after year because of the camaraderie with my fellow firefighters and I can raise awareness and money for those who suffer from lung disease.”

The Milwaukee Fight For Air Climb, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Wisconsin, attracts hundreds of climbers from across Wisconsin who support efforts to help end lung disease. The mission of the Lung Association directly impacts firefighters since respiratory diseases remain a significant health issue for firefighters and emergency responders. Firefighters are at a higher risk to develop chronic issues, including lingering cough, hoarseness, asthma, allergies, and in more extreme cases, may be diagnosed with lung or bronchial cancer.

“Firefighters like Aaron not only put their lives on the line each day to save others, they fundraise and participate in events like our Fight For Air Climb while off-duty,” said Megan Cordova, executive director of the Lung Association. “We are proud of their daily sacrifice and are grateful that Aaron, as well as hundreds of other firefighters here in Wisconsin, participate in our annual event.”

The first Anthem Firefighter Challenge at the Milwaukee Climb event began in 2009. There are 26 firefighter departments participating in this year’s Firefighter Challenge.
