On January 21, 2022, Mark Pocan submitted a letter to the Attorney General of the United States, Merrick Garland, requesting an investigation into the ten Electors who presented their electoral ballots for President Trump after the 2020 Presidential Election in Wisconsin. The Electors met at the state capital at noon on December 14th and cast their votes as required by federal law.

Mr. Pocan contends that the Electors’ votes were fraudulent, as Governor Evers already certified the election in favor of Joe Biden. However, because litigation contesting the results of the election was ongoing, the certification was not viable. Thanks to their legal counsel and the precedent set during the recount in Hawaii after the 1960 Presidential Election (Nixon vs. Kennedy), the Electors were able to confidently and legally submit their ballots in favor of President Trump.

Mark Pocan’s request for an investigation by the Department of Justice into the lives of private citizens who were performing their civic and constitutionally required duty is not only disturbing but also sets a dangerous precedent for the federal government’s involvement in state election laws.

As the candidate opposing Mark Pocan in the 2022 election cycle, I not only condemn his authoritarian request to AG Garland outright, but also question his motives in making it. To contrast Mr. Pocan’s disdain for you and all voters who may challenge the outcome of the 2020 election, I’d like to reiterate my ambition to, when elected, introduce legislation that will buttress the state’s authority in our elections, bringing confidence that we can have free and fair elections for all Americans, regardless of their political affiliation.
