MADISON – Today, Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels claimed he changed his stance on abortion and now supports allowing exceptions for rape and incest. The change comes just weeks after Michels said he would not soften his views on abortion. In response to these developments, Dr. Shefaali Sharma, an OB/GYN in Madison, released the following statement:

“Make no mistake, Tim Michels maintains extremist views against abortion access that present a real danger to my patients and women across Wisconsin. Time and again, Michels has expressed his support for Wisconsin’s 1849 ban on abortion, which has no exception for rape or incest. He’s given hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations that oppose abortion even in cases to save women’s lives. Whatever he says, Michels can’t hide his clear track record of supporting interfering in women’s personal health care decisions.Politics and politicians do not belong in my exam room – these sensitive and critical decisions should be between a woman and her physician.”
