Superior, Wis. – Today, Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary-designee Kathy Blumenfeld, met with Superior Mayor Jim Paine to tour the Superior Douglas County YMCA, as part of a Beyond the Classroom program visit. The Superior Douglas County YMCA received over $490,000 as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Beyond the Classroom grant program. Douglas County received a total investment of $763,621 through the program. First announced by Governor Tony Evers, the Beyond the Classroom program provided a $50 million investment statewide to support after school and summer programming during 2021 and 2022.

“YMCA facilities across the state provided critical childcare during the school year and summer months throughout the pandemic, and we’re proud to see how Beyond the Classroom grant funding was used to support kids and families right here in Superior,” said DOA Secretary-designee Kathy Blumenfeld.

“Superior YMCA is a vital organization to the city of Superior providing support to children and families that otherwise would have been left behind by the effects of the pandemic,” said Mayor Jim Paine.  “These ARPA funds will help the YMCA extend their reach in our community.”

The Secretary participated in a tour of Y facilities, and ongoing preschool and school-aged day programs for youth. Beyond the Classroom grant funds were used to support infrastructure improvements and staffing at Camp Tall Pines on Lake Nebagamon, as well as free up programming dollars and enrollment for additional summer school-aged programs at the Y.

“The Superior YMCA believes in strengthening the community and with these funds we were able to continue provide opportunities for our youth,” said YMCA Superior CEO Carl Klubertanz.
