MADISON, Wis. — The New York Times reported yesterday that Tim Michels fully embraced the Big Lie and election decertification after aides to Donald Trump reprimanded Michels for comments he made during a July debate.

The New York Times reported that after Michels wouldn’t commit to Trump’s demands:

A roar came from Mar-a-Lago, communicated through aides to Mr. Michels, demanding that   he embrace the decertification movement, according to people familiar with the conversations.

Mr. Michels reversed course, saying that he was “very, very fired up about this election integrity issue” and pledging to consider signing a decertification bill if legislators passed one.

By the final days of the primary, Mr. Michels was promoting the election conspiracy theory amplified in the film “2000 Mules” and was promising to consider signing legislation clawing back Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes from the 2020 election.

Last night during the WBA Debate, Michels did not agree to accept the results of the 2022 election, and Michels has continued to wholeheartedly embrace Trump’s radical agenda to undermine democracy, including refusing to commit to certifying the 2024 presidential election in Wisconsin, as the governor is required to do by law. Michels has previously compared his certifying the next presidential election to asking him to “verify the winner of the Kentucky Derby two years from now.” Michels has made clear he would be willing to overturn free and fair election results if he doesn’t get the outcome he wants. The Washington Post has identified Michels on a list of dangerous election deniers running for office.

While Michels is a danger to our free and fair elections, Gov. Evers will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure every eligible voter is able to participate in elections and that Wisconsin elections continue to be safe, accessible, and secure.

“Tim Michels says he’s not beholden to anyone, but the truth is, he’s the ultimate puppet for Donald Trump,” said Tony for Wisconsin Spokesperson Kayla Anderson. “An endorsement from the former president comes with strings attached — and undermining democracy and embracing radical conspiracies must be a centerpiece of your agenda. Michels is too radical and wrong for Wisconsin.”
