Franklin, WI – Forward Latino, a non-partisan, non-profit service, and advocacy organization applauds the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act by President Joe Biden into law earlier today. The bill, shepherded through Congress by Senator Tammy Baldwin, enshrines into statute the right for lawfully married couples to be acknowledged as such in all states, territories, and commonwealths of the United States. The law also repeals the Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Darryl Morin, Forward Latino National President issued the following statement:

“Today Forward Latino and our nationwide membership thanks President Joe Biden for signing the Respect for Marriage Act into law. We also thank U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin for her leadership in getting the bill passed in Congress. After recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that have overturned legal precedent that many of the justices themselves had once called “settled law,” we are appreciative that Congress has wisely acted on the will of the people. They have clearly defined the rights and protections of married couples, regardless of their sex, race, ethnicity or national origin. In 2022 alone we have seen more than 240 anti-LGBTQ pieces of legislation submitted for consideration in state legislatures. This law will settle the question once and for all. Love wins.”
