MADISON – Today, Wisconsin State Treasurer and candidate for U.S. Senate Sarah Godlewski marked the one-year anniversary of the violent January 6th insurrection on the nation’s Capitol. Godlewski called attention to the lies Ron Johnson has peddled around the 2020 election and his attempts to subvert the will of the people in future elections.

“January 6, 2021, was a dark day for the United States. Five police officers have died in connection to that day and countless others were injured because Republicans like Ron Johnson refused to accept the results of our election, and instead, peddled Trump’s Big Lie,” said State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski. “Since then, Ron Johnson has continued to try to gaslight the American public about the violent insurrectionists who besieged the U.S. Capitol to silence the will of the people. Now, he’s actively working to find new ways to silence voters in future elections and erode our democracy. Ron Johnson has zero business being anywhere near the U.S. Senate, and I will fight like hell to make sure he loses in November. The future of our democracy depends on it.”

In the days leading up to the Capitol insurrection, Ron Johnson was spreading Trump’s Big Lie. Ever since, Johnson has called it a “peaceful protest” and claimed the insurrectionists were “people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break the law.” Johnson and his Republican colleagues have blocked multiple pieces of critical voting rights legislation from passing in the Senate. Most recently, he began pushing Wisconsin Republicans to take over federal elections.

Yesterday, the Sarah for Wisconsin campaign launched a new, five-figure digital campaign push to call out Ron Johnson’s false statements and misinformation. The video also exposes Johnson’s defense, excuses, and cover for the violent Capitol insurrectionists who attempted to overturn the election and attack American democracy. Watch the ad here.
