Milwaukee, WI (November 8, 2022) – Tonight, retired Chief Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court Anna Maria Hodges was elected as the next Milwaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court. Hodges, the Democratic nominee, will take office on January 2, 2023. The Milwaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court is a constitutional officer responsible for clerical, record-keeping, and administrative services supporting the largest trial court system in Wisconsin.

“I am profoundly honored, humbled, and gratified by our community’s trust,” said Hodges. “I ran for Clerk of Circuit Court to bring the people’s voice to the halls of justice, and that is exactly what I will do upon taking office. I will work with community partners, justice system stakeholders, and the dedicated public servants of the Clerk of Circuit Court’s Office to improve procedural justice and customer service. I am committed to working with every possible partner to make Milwaukee County’s court system a model for efficiency and public access.”

Prior to entering the race for Clerk of Circuit Court, Hodges devoted nearly 30 years to public service in county and state government. From 2018 to 2022, she served as Chief Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court and, from January to February 2022, as Acting Clerk of Circuit Court following the retirement of longtime Clerk of Circuit Court John Barrett. Hodges previously served as Assistant Chief Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court and Civil Division Administrator from 2006 to 2018, as Court Coordinator and Deputy Director of Litigation Services for the First Judicial Administrative District between 2000 and 2006, as Deputy Director of the Milwaukee Office of former Governor Tommy Thompson, and as Constituent Services Representative in the office of former Milwaukee County Executive F. Thomas Ament.

Hodges graduated magna cum laude from Cardinal Stritch University with a Bachelor of Science in Management. A mother and grandmother, she resides in Brown Deer. Upon taking office, Hodges will become the first Afro-Latina to serve as an elected Clerk of Circuit Court in Wisconsin, and the first person of color and first woman to serve as the elected Milwaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court.
