Madison, Wis. — IRG Action Fund Executive Vice President, Chris Reader, released the following statement after unemployment insurance and welfare reform legislation passed the State Assembly Thursday.
“The legislation passed today reforms UI to make sure benefits are available for those that truly need them while also keeping taxes low for employers. By passing these bills, lawmakers are aligning benefits to real world conditions, recognizing that if jobs are plentiful, six months of unemployment is likely too much. They are cracking down on one of the biggest complaints employers have today as they struggle to fill jobs—people fraudulently ‘ghosting’ interviews and job offers while still claiming UI benefits. This legislation addresses many areas of the UI program that were brought to light during the pandemic in need of reform. Gov. Evers’ failed leadership early in the pandemic left many of our friends and neighbors without help – these reforms help make sure that won’t happen again.”
Chris Reader testified in the Wisconsin Assembly committee in support of unemployment insurance reforms. A letter from Ariens Co. was also submitted to the committee sharing concerns of job abandonment and interview ghosting.
