Madison, Wis. — IRG Action Fund Executive Vice President, Chris Reader, testified in the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate this week in support of unemployment insurance reforms. These reforms would hold the Department of Workforce Development accountable, crackdown on individuals not showing up for interviews while still counting those interviews as a work search for benefit eligibility, encourage workforce participation by aligning benefits to marketplace realities, and keep taxes lower for employers by protecting the integrity of the UI Trust Fund. A letter from Ariens Co. was also submitted to the committee sharing concerns of job abandonment and interview ghosting.
“Because of Gov. Evers failed leadership, too many of our friends and neighbors were left without help when state government shut down the economy at the start of the pandemic,” said Chris Reader, EVP of IRG Action Fund. “Not only will the bills heard today ensure those failures don’t repeat, but they also align UI benefits to real world economic conditions and crackdown on “ghosting.” These common sense reforms will make sure benefits are available for those who really need them, while keeping UI taxes low for employers.”
