AG candidate fights to ensure CCW permit holders remain confidential

[Balsam Lake, Wis.] – Today, Attorney General candidate Adam Jarchow sent Attorney General Josh Kaul and the Department of Justice an open records request regarding the Department’s communication with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and their efforts to obtain personal information on Wisconsin Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit holders.

The request comes on the heels of the Missouri Department of Justice recently receiving notification from Missouri sheriffs that the FFBI will be auditing CCW databases, stating “The audit includes an onsite review of your Concealed Carry Weapons Permits…” Voters have the right to know whether the FBI is conducting similar operations in Wisconsin and if Kaul is aiding them in a blatant violation of state law.

Wisconsin State Statute 175.60(12) clearly states that the Wisconsin DOJ CCW database shall not be shared with anyone, including law enforcement officers, except for one of the following reasons:

  • “To confirm that a license or certification card produced by an individual at the request of a law enforcement officer is valid.”
  • “If an individual is carrying a concealed weapon and claims to hold a valid license issued under this section or a valid certification card issued under s. 175.49 (3) but does not have his or her license document or certification card, to confirm that the individual holds a valid license or certification card.”
  • “To investigate whether an individual submitted an intentionally false statement under sub.”
  • “To investigate whether an individual complied with sub. (14) (b) 3.” (license suspensions)

“Wisconsin CCW permit holders have their names and information protected by state statute,” said Jarchow. “Unfortunately, Attorney General Kaul isn’t known for defending the rule of law. The people of Wisconsin need an assurance that their personal information is safe and that our Attorney General is fulfilling his sworn duty.”

Jarchow is the only statewide primary candidate who’s received an endorsement from the National Rifle Association. Coupled with his A+ rating, Wisconsin voters know he will always fight for the right to keep and bear arms.
