(Waukesha, Wis.) – Today, Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Maria Lazar announces that her  campaign team received almost double the necessary signatures to appear on the ballot in order to run  for the open seat for the Wisconsin State Court of Appeals, District 2, this April, 2022. 

“I am thrilled to see the support our community has for my campaign. It is such an honor to run for  office, and I look forward to the spring election,” said Waukesha County Circuit Court Branch 7 Judge,  the Honorable Maria S. Lazar. “As election day nears, I will keep engaging with voters and letting them  know where I stand on the rule of law and my judicial philosophy. This is an important election.” 

Judge Lazar submitted over 1,800 signatures to the Wisconsin Elections Commission in order to run for  the open seat for District 2 of the Wisconsin State Court of Appeals. Only 1,000 signatures are required  in order to run for this office. Currently, she is the only candidate to have submitted their signatures to  be allowed ballot access. 

First elected to the Waukesha Circuit Court in April of 2015, she is currently the Presiding Judge in the  Juvenile Division and has been a Presiding Judge in the Criminal Division, as well as having served as  Drug Treatment Court Judge and in the circuit court’s Civil Division. 

Judge Lazar has also served the people of the Badger State as a Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General, in  the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit. Lazar was lead counsel in several complex, civil litigation matters  for the State, including the initial state court Act 10/collective bargaining case, the Capitol Access case,  the federal redistricting matter, and the First Amendment challenge to the permitting system at the  State Capitol, among many others.  

She has served as the President of the Milwaukee Bar Association and was a member of its Board of  Directors. Lazar also served two terms on the State of Wisconsin’s Board of Governors. A Wisconsin  native, Judge Lazar earned her B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Mount Mary College and her J.D.  from Georgetown University Law Center. 

District 2 of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals covers 12 counties in the southeastern corner of the state.  The counties include Calumet, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Kenosha, Manitowoc, Ozaukee, Racine,  Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha, and Winnebago.
