MADISON, WI–The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is launching a series of webinars to inform Wisconsinites on the role of state courts, issues surrounding the judiciary and the importance of voting in judicial elections.

The first of this series is “Understanding Wisconsin’s Courts and Judicial Elections,” an introductory look at the function and role of state courts in our lives. Join the League at noon on Wednesday, March 16 for this virtual event.

“The League has long stood for civic engagement and fair, independent state courts,” said Debra Cronmiller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. “As the April 5 Spring Election approaches, it’s crucial Wisconsin voters understand the scope of what their elected officials do.”

This webinar will feature Prof. Jolly Emrey, Associate Professor and Chair, Political Science Department at UW-Whitewater, and Judge Paul Higginbotham, former Appellate Judge (2003-2017), Circuit Court Judge (1994-2003), and City of Madison Municipal Judge (1992-93).

Spring elections, and thus judicial elections in Wisconsin traditionally have low turnout. State courts make decisions on voting rights, family disputes, public safety and more. As the Spring Election nears, Wisconsin voters can visit vote411.org and select the judicial candidate with values that matter – like fairness, integrity and transparency.

The League will hold webinars throughout spring, covering issues like dark money and recusal, racial disparities in the judicial system and underrepresentation of people of color in law schools and on the courts. Follow the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin on social media to stay up-to-date on future events.

For those who cannot make the live events in this series, the recordings will be posted to the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin’s YouTube page and website.
