KENOSHA, Wisc. – Today marks the anniversary of day three of the violent riots in Kenosha, when Tony Evers played politics with public safety and turned down federal assistance, despite pleas from local elected officials.
“When Kenosha desperately needed leadership, Tony Evers was missing in action,” said Tim Michels, the Wisconsin business leader, 12-year Army Ranger veteran and Republican nominee for governor. “Wisconsin needs a governor who will lead in times of crisis, not someone who is afraid of offending the mob and then just shirks his responsibilities. Tony Evers doesn’t prioritize public safety, but I will.”
According to the White House, “Local law enforcement in Wisconsin have told the White House they need at least 750 National Guard tonight. Governor Evers is only sending 250. Today, Mark Meadows called the Governor and offered 500 additional guard to meet the police needs. Governor Evers declined.” Senator Van Wanggaard and Representative Samantha Kerkman also begged Evers for additional support.
Nonetheless, Evers declined the help as his spokeswoman snarked that Wisconsin “would not need federal assistance in response to protests but would welcome additional federal support and resources for our state’s response to COVID-19.”
Now, Tony Evers calls the riots a “dead issue” and maintains that he has “no regrets” over his disastrous response that left businesses destroyed and a community burned. Wisconsin deserves better.
“Help is on the way,” said Michels.
