MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – As Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels campaigns near the north side of Milwaukee today, Governor Tony Evers will be joined by former President Barack Obama at a rally celebrating one of the nation’s poorest performing public schools.

“For generations of kids stuck at schools like North Division, the education establishment continues to fail them, and Tony Evers’ only solutions are to lower standards, diminish expectations, and raise budgets,” said Michels, an Army veteran and successful Wisconsin business leader. “Instead of having a party today, Governor Evers should apologize for his four decades of failing to offer opportunities to Milwaukee’s students.”

Some facts about the failures of the educational establishment at the MPS school hosting the Evers/Barnes/Obama rally today:Only 45% of kids at North DivisionHigh Schoolgraduate on time, compared to 90% of students statewide.Zero percent of kids at North Division HighSchool can do math or science at grade level according to the state ASPIRE exam. Low test scores and low graduation rates show that Gov. Tony Evers, theself-proclaimed “education governor” is failing these kids. “Help is on the way,” said Michels. “I will empower all parents, no matter where in Wisconsin they live or the color of their skin. Every student will have more options and more opportunities to succeed. School choice for all families, and a laser-like focus on early childhood literacy, will improve all schools. I won’t accept failure. These kids deserve better than what the establishment has offered them for the last 40 years.”

Michels kicked off today’s leg of the “Let’s Get to Work” caravan with a 9:30 AM rally in Milwaukee County. After visiting the Republican Party of Milwaukee County office in West Allis, Michels visited diners in West Allis and Brookfield. Along with meeting voters near Milwaukee’s north side this afternoon, Michels will also stop at events in Cedarburg and Menomonee Falls.
