Milwaukee, WI – The family of Brieon Green (21) and the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression will be holding a press conference this Friday, July 29, at noon outside of the Milwaukee County Courthouse (901 N 9th St.). During the press conference, we will be demanding the following:
-
The public release of all the officer’s names who arrested Green and handled his booking
-
The release of the body camera footage of all 7 officers who interacted with Green during his arrest and inside the county jail
-
The release of the footage from street cameras that captured Green’s arrest
-
The release of the footage from the squad car in which Green was arrested
-
The release of the footage from the cameras inside the county jail to ensure that Green was booked, medically cleared, and alive prior to being jailed
-
Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson to open a formal investigation into Green’s death
Green was arrested on Sunday, June 26, and died three hours after his arrest while at Milwaukee County Jail. An entire month has passed since Green’s death, and his family has yet received clear answers as to why and how he died. Green’s family needs to know what happened. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is refusing to be transparent. Issues around transparency are not uncommon for law enforcement in Milwaukee. In April, Keishon Thomas (20), died while in police custody at Milwaukee Police District 5. Cases like these further deteriorate the little, if any, trust that community members may have in Milwaukee’s law enforcement.
We at the Milwaukee Alliance understand the importance of transparency for holding law enforcement accountable. Our 24/48 Campaign seeks to increase the level of transparency from the Milwaukee Police Department. We demand the creation of a policy that in cases of police misconduct requires the public release of officer names within 24 hours and footage within 48 hours. While the campaign is presently focused on the Milwaukee Police Department, similar standards would clearly benefit the standard operating procedures of other law enforcement entities in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Alliance stands in full solidarity with the family of Brieon Green!
