MILWAUKEE – Today the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors held a presentation in honor of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month at their monthly meeting.

Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, 1st Vice Chair Sequanna Taylor, and Supervisors Liz Sumner and Peter Burgelis each authored a recognition citation honoring a member of Milwaukee’s AAPI community. They released the following statement:

“As we take the month of May to celebrate the numerous contributions of the Asian American Pacific Islander community in Milwaukee County and beyond, we were proud to take time at the top of today’s meeting to amplify the stories and accomplishments achieved by these three exceptional Milwaukeeans.  

 

“Today, the County Board once again acknowledged the importance of AAPI representation and denounced all forms of hate toward Asian identifying individuals. We remain committed to our vision of racial equity and will continue to highlight the incredible diversity in our community.”  

Chairwoman Nicholson authored a citation in honor of Jilly Gokalgandhi, the District 5 Representative on the Milwaukee Public Schools Board of Directors.

1st Vice Chair Taylor authored a citation in honor of Maliya Xiong, a Project Manager for Wisconsin United Coalition of Mutual Assistance Associations.

Supervisors Sumner and Burgelis authored a citation for Erik Kennedy, Co-Founder of ElevAsian and Executive Board member of the AAPI Coalition of Wisconsin.
