MILWAUKEE, Wis. – On Tuesday, November 29, The Committee on Transportation and Transit recommended for adoption [3-1] a resolution calling upon the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to reconstruct Interstate 94 (I-94) between 70th Street and 16th Street with six lanes, or “Fix at Six,” and opposing the eight-lane alternative. County Supervisor Peter Burgelis authored the resolution and made the following statement.
“For years WIS-DOT has engaged community partners and nearby residents and modified previous design options for the I-94 reconstruction project. Today, the Transportation & Transit Committee of which I am a member heard from residents in-person and virtually- all of whom opposed the DOT’s eight lane preferred design.” said Supervisor Burgelis. “The rebuild of I-94 is overdue, necessary, and will spur thousands of local, family-supporting union jobs, but the six-lane option will best preserve quality of life for surrounding neighborhoods. The six-lane design combined with permanent transit investments will best serve the transportation needs of all of Milwaukee County.”
Milwaukee County Supervisor Peter Burgelis represents Milwaukee County’s 15th District, which encompasses much of the proposed construction.
Committee Chairwoman Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones, and Supervisors Steven Shea, and Peter Burgelis voted in favor of the resolution. Supervisor Patti Logsdon voted against. Supervisor Dyango Zerpa was excused from the meeting. The full Milwaukee County Board will consider the item at its December 15, 2022 meeting.
The project’s estimated cost is $1.2 billion. It would add a fourth lane in each direction on the freeway. Two public hearings are planned for the public to review and provide input on the preferred alternative. WIS DOT’s 60-day public comment period ends January 17th for final project submission to the Federal Transportation Administration. Additional details on those public hearings:
