MILWAUKEE, WI – Today, Milwaukee County announced that it is accepting applications to the revived Milwaukee County Youth Commission. The resolution, co-authored by County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, County Executive David Crowley, and Supervisor Sequanna Taylor, was adopted by the County Board in May of 2022 and signed into law by the County Executive in June of 2022.

The Youth Commission will work in partnership with the County Board Chairwoman and County Executive to make advisory recommendations about policy and budgetary decisions to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, and to advance the county’s mission of achieving racial equity. The Commission will also receive support from various Milwaukee County departments.

County Executive Crowley served on the original Youth Commission from 2004-2005.

“I’m excited to see the Youth Commission becoming a reality. My service on the Youth Commission opened my eyes to the power and potential that every person, even young people, in our community has to offer. Today’s youth should have the opportunity to realize their same power and have an active voice in County government,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “I encourage our youngest residents to apply and make sure their ideas, their passion, and their voice are represented in County Government.”

Chairwoman Nicholson was a classroom educator before and during her tenure on the Board of Supervisors.

“As an educator, I will always be committed to engaging with our youth to uplift the conditions of all people across our community,” said Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson. “Our young people certainly are our future, but they should also be empowered today to make their voices heard on the issues that affect them and their families. Milwaukee County is stronger when everyone, including our youth, are given a seat at the table. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the Youth Commission on their important work.”

Applications can be submitted at county.milwaukee.gov/youthcommission. Eligible youth are strongly encouraged to apply. There will be one Commissioner to represent each of the 18 supervisory districts in Milwaukee County and two Commissioners who will represent the County Executive and Board Chairperson and serve as Co-Chairs. The application submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022.
