MILWAUKEE, WI – Milwaukee County will celebrate its birthday on Thursday, August 25, marking the anniversary of an act passed by the Michigan territorial legislature giving Milwaukee County an independent organization.
County Executive David Crowley and County Supervisors will commemorate the 187th anniversary of Milwaukee County’s establishment with a special birthday celebration Thursday at the County Zoo at 9:30 a.m.
“As a native and lifelong resident, I am proud to call Milwaukee County home and even more proud to help usher a forward-thinking vision for all of our residents, with my colleagues on the County Board,” said County Executive David Crowley. “We truly are the engine that drives our State, and on Milwaukee County’s birthday, I join the Board, and the thousands all of County staff in showcasing what makes us great, unique and impactful from a cultural, social and economic standpoint.”
“From its beautiful parks and museums to its champion professional sports teams, Milwaukee County is a world class place to live, work, and visit,” said County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson. “As we continue to propel toward our vision of racial and health equity, I want to remind us all that Milwaukee County’s true strength lies in our diversity and the unique, culturally rich communities that make this a place that I am proud to call home. Let’s celebrate as we mark another year of Milwaukee County!”
Milwaukee County’s GDP is greater than Iceland and 98 other nations. Its economic output exceeds 49 other Wisconsin counties, combined. Milwaukee County is the only Wisconsin county to export income to surrounding counties.
The County provides critical services such as housing, mental health, parks, transportation, and youth services. All services essential to promote a thriving community for residents.
Milwaukee County is the most populous county in the State of Wisconsin. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan and covering 241 square miles, it is a mixture of metropolitan, suburban, and rural living. The County is one of a very few fully incorporated counties in the United States and includes 19 municipalities that range from a large urban center in the City of Milwaukee to villages such as River Hills.
