MILWAUKEE – The City of Milwaukee’s Healing Spaces Initiative (HSI) was honored by the Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation (MANDIs) with the Northwestern Mutual Collaboration Award.

The Healing Spaces Initiative empowers residents to build relaxing natural environments on available City-owned vacant lots that help eliminate blighted spaces, improve public safety, and create new gathering spaces that strengthen Milwaukee neighborhoods. HSI is coordinated through the City of Milwaukee’s Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation (NIDC).

“The Healing Spaces Initiative is creating vibrant gathering places that allow residents to relax, reflect, and enjoy our city,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “Congratulations to the Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation for receiving this honor and working to strengthen Milwaukee neighborhoods.”

The Northwestern Mutual Foundation Collaboration Award recognizes community impact through an initiative that utilizes small, grassroots collaborative efforts to affect change and advance progress. HSI projects are envisioned by local residents and are the result of robust community outreach efforts – making this initiative an ideal recipient of the MANDI.
