MILWAUKEE, Wis – As Wisconsin residents head to the polls for the November 8 election and candidates watch the votes come in on election night, eyes will turn to the impact of Wisconsin’s Latino community.
In the lead up to the 2022 midterm elections, candidates are hitting the streets, shaking hands, trying to get support from all demographic categories of voters. But which way will the Latino vote break? The answer is more complicated than many believe.
Immigration typically has been tied to Latino voters, and it remains a major issue. But there are numerous other significant issues, such as infrastructure in Puerto Rico, relations with Cuba, policy surrounding those who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status and how to deal with migrants from Central and South America.
How well — or how poorly — have candidates addressed these issues? Do Latino voters feel ignored, or that their voices are being heard? What can history tell us about this moment?
The Milwaukee Press Club, WisPolitics.com and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Wisconsin Chapter will partner on Wednesday, October 26 to present a panel discussion on the importance of the Latino vote during this election.
Ricardo Torres, a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter, and vice president of the NAHJ Wisconsin Chapter, will moderate the discussion.
Fabi Maldonado – Racine County Board Supervisor; Political Director of Voces de la Frontera
Darryl Morin – President & CEO of Advanced Wireless, Inc.; President and Chairman of Forward Latino
