MILWAUKEE (July 28, 2022) – Milwaukee Public Schools announced tonight updates to the district’s COVID-19 mask wearing policy during the July monthly meeting with the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. Effective immediately, the district will transition to mandatory mask wearing only when COVID-19 community levels in Milwaukee County are designated as high. The mask policy applies to all MPS schools, buildings, and activities.
The district will follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID Data Tracker as the source for COVID-19 data in Milwaukee County. COVID-19 community levels will be monitored by the district on a weekly basis. If COVID-19 levels drop to medium or low, MPS will transition to optional mask wearing.
The CDC updates its COVID-19 Community Levels data on Thursdays. The district will send communications to families, staff, and the community when the mask policy changes levels.
As a reminder, MPS schools on the early start calendar begin on Monday, August 15, 2022. Schools on the traditional start calendar begin on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.
MPS will continue to have masks available for students and staff at all schools and district sites. We ask our students and families to please continue to take daily steps to avoid COVID-19.
