Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers in his bid for reelection. Governor Evers was first elected in 2018.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju said:

“NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Governor Tony Evers for reelection. With a state legislature controlled by anti-choice politicians, it is more important than ever that Wisconsinites hold onto a governor willing to stand up for their freedom to make their own decisions about their families and futures. Governor Evers has consistently advocated for reproductive freedom, fought back against restrictions on abortion access, and pushed hard to expand access in the state and nationally. With the Supreme Court’s anti-choice supermajority poised to potentially end Roe v. Wade in the coming weeks, it is more critical than ever that we hold on to champions like Governor Evers that represent the values of a majority of Wisconsinites that support reproductive freedom.”

Governor Tony Evers said:

“I’m honored to have the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America because abortion access is on the line in Wisconsin. My veto pen is the only thing stopping Republican lawmakers from passing extreme legislation banning abortion and blocking access to reproductive healthcare. I believe politicians shouldn’t be inserting themselves in personal, intimate reproductive healthcare decisions; we should trust people to make decisions that work best for them and their family with their healthcare providers. I’ll always do the right thing for our state and defend access to abortion in Wisconsin.”

Governor Evers has been a bold champion in the fight for reproductive freedom. Earlier this month, he ordered a special session of the Wisconsin State Legislature to overturn the state’s pre-Roe v. Wade abortion ban, which could go into effect if Roe falls. Yesterday, the Wisconsin Senate gaveled into and out of that special session in under a minute, disregarding the majority of Wisconsinites that support reproductive freedom. Gov. Evers led a coalition of 17 governors calling on Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) to safeguard the legal right to abortion throughout the United States under federal law. Gov. Evers consistently supports legislation to expand abortion access, fund family planning services, and protect abortion providers and other health workers.

This endorsement comes as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up our work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. In the coming days, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recent leak of the Court’s draft majority opinion confirmed that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it. If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, roughly half of the states in the country—including Wisconsin—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. If Roe is overturned and states move swiftly to ban abortion, Wisconsinites are predicted to see a 171% increase in driving distance when seeking abortion care.

NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List recently announced a partnership to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions across the country.
