Survivors of clergy abuse and advocates were just informed that Archbishop Jerome Listecki has banned members of the media from former Archbishop Weakland’s public celebration of life. Since the announcement of Weakland’s public funeral, Listecki has vigorously defended his choice to invite the Milwaukee community to honor Weakland’s life and legacy. And now, an hour before the service is to begin, Listecki has reversed his position, once again concealing Weakland’s legacy from the media and the public.

What is it that the Archdiocese of Milwaukee does not want our community to see and hear? Is it Weakland’s co-conspirators such as Bishop Sklba, former Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann, Weakland’s chief corporate lawyer Matt Flynn, and others? Is it that they will bury him in the symbols of Church power, the same symbols of power he used to order the concealment of child sex crimes and transfer of abusive priests? Is it that they do not want the public to hear their praise for the man who enabled tens of thousands of sex crimes against children?
