Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) announced another round of statewide Democracy Defenders, the final in the series of our 2022 Democracy Targets. The list includes Democratic candidates for statewide offices in Texas and Maryland, as well as Democratic state legislative candidates in Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.

While the NDRC has long played in state-level elections critical for redistricting, this is the first election cycle where its electoral program has expanded to support candidates for offices that are critical to protecting democracy overall, in addition to those that are involved in redistricting. The full list of candidates is available here.

“This is a dangerous time for America. Democracy should not be a partisan issue, but right now, and in too many places, elements of the Republican Party have demonstrated that they are comfortable bending – or even breaking – the structures of our democracy to maintain majority rule even when they have minority support from the people. From perpetuating the Big Lie, to gerrymandering and voter suppression, to attacks on our electoral infrastructure, too many in the Republican Party are waging an anti-democracy agenda, and we must make sure voters understand what is at stake this election,” said Eric Holder, the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of the NDRC. “The threats we face are real. That’s why we are shining a spotlight on pro-democracy candidates up and down the ballot – to ensure voters know who to support to not only strengthen our institutions of democracy, but also to protect them. Our democracy is on the ballot this November and in order to protect democracy, we must do democracy. Everyone must do their part by voting and helping others to vote. The stakes are high. The need for action is unprecedented.”
