Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, released the following statement in response to the decision issued by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which adopted the new congressional and state legislative maps presented to the court by Governor Tony Evers:
“Wisconsin’s 2011 maps were some of the most egregious gerrymanders in the nation. In an attempt to bring fairness to the citizens of Wisconsin Governor Evers submitted – and Wisconsin’s highest court has now adopted – the most reasonable maps possible that will deliver, under the circumstances, the best outcomes for Wisconsinites. Thanks to Governor Tony Evers and the People’s Maps Commission, the people actually had a chance to be heard during this redistricting process. The Wisconsin Supreme Court has selected the maps presented by Governor Evers as the most reasonable, fair maps before it. In doing so the Court rejected the egregiously gerrymandered proposals submitted by the Republican Party. The maps selected include the maintenance of two competitive congressional seats and the addition of a possible black-majority state Senate seat in the Milwaukee area.”
