APPLETON, Wis. – Following President Biden’s State of the Union address and ahead of his planned trip to Superior, Wis., on Wednesday, grassroots populist U.S. Senate candidate Tom Nelson urged the president to STOP the controversial Line 5 crude oil pipeline project that cuts across northern Wisconsin.

Nelson, the Outagamie County Executive, also voiced support for initiatives raised in the speech, including cracking down on corporate profiteering, raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour, efforts to lower the cost of prescription drugs, support for the Ukraine resistance and new urgency to tackle the climate crisis:

“President Biden has a lot on his plate, but, as he visits Wisconsin Wednesday, I urge him to STOP LINE 5.

Line 5 is an ecological disaster that prolongs our reliance on the types of fossil fuels that are funding the disastrous Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ending Line 5 is a great chance for President Biden to honor tribal treaties, protect Wisconsin’s natural resources and face the global climate crisis with the very sense of urgency he rightly conveyed in the State of the Union.

The address also highlighted several of the fights we’ve been waging for the working families of Wisconsin, including addressing corporate consolidation, raising the minimum wage, taking the fight to Big Pharma to lower prescription drug costs and investing in good manufacturing jobs-which are UNION jobs.”

Thank you, Mr. President, for standing up for working families. Now, please stand up for Wisconsin and STOP LINE 5.”
