Appleton, Wis. – Following is the response of Outagamie County Executive and U.S. Senate candidate Tom Nelson to news that the U.S. Supreme Court has thrown out Governor Evers’s Wisconsin legislative maps:
“This U.S. Supreme Court ruling is a massive overstep by our federal judiciary and I condemn the Republican-controlled Supreme Court for continuing to chip away at the Voting Rights Act. As Justice Sotomayor says in dissent, ‘The Court’s action today is unprecedented.’ Governor Evers’s maps were ruled most compliant with the ‘least changes’ approach adopted by the Wisconsin Supreme Court last year, but the U.S. Supreme Court overrules this, instead issuing a racist decision that sets voting rights back nationwide.
“The U.S. Supreme Court has chosen to keep Evers’s congressional districts map in place, and that is a small victory. In a 50-50 state like Wisconsin, our districts should reflect that, and the proposed congressional maps are an improvement over our current situation. My sincere hope is that the Wisconsin Supreme Court will once again side with Governor Evers’s maps on further deliberation.”
