Ad lampoons Johnson and shows clear contrast in values and biography between Nelson and billionaire son-in-law Ron Johnson
APPLETON, Wis. – Tom Nelson, the grassroots populist Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and Outagamie County Executive, issued this statement upon Ron Johnson declaring he had broken his promise to only serve two terms in the U.S. Senate:
“Ron Johnson has spent the last decade catering to the ultra-wealthy millionaires and corporate interests who fund his campaign. I’ve spent the last seventeen years fighting for Wisconsin families, including helping save a century-old paper mill in my home county with hundreds of union jobs preserved. Wisconsin needs a Senator that will promote Main Street solutions to our rigged economy, not another millionaire or billionaire.”
Nelson for Wisconsin also released a digital ad inspired by Johnson’s phony “outsider” Whiteboard Ads run during his 2010 and 2016 campaigns.
The ad highlights how the U.S. Senate is dominated by millionaires looking out for their own interests, citing Johnson’s inaction on raising the wage floor for workers even as he was a proponent of the massive tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires like himself:
“In 2020, in the U.S. Senate, there were 65 millionaires, including Ron Johnson, who married into a billionaire family that gave him a job.
“Thanks to the 2017 Trump – Ron Johnson tax cut scam and the COVID crisis, 745 billionaires now own more wealth than the bottom 50% of earners in this country.
“Meanwhile, the minimum wage has been set at $7.25 an hour since 2009. Those are the priorities of a U.S. Senate that look out for the interests of millionaires, not working families here in Wisconsin.”
