NextGen America President Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez released the following statement on President Biden’s first State of the Union address to the American people:

“Over the last year, the Biden administration has led our country through unprecedented and unpredictable challenges. These are not easy times for many Americans, especially young people, many now living with their parents, struggling to pay for basic needs and trying to get back to normal after years of uncertainty.

“The Biden administration has done a lot to pull us out of this pandemic, from offering widespread vaccines and tests to passing critical legislation like the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law providing urgent relief to families impacted by COVID, rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, reducing child poverty and much more.

“But there are things within his power that he could do now that would relieve the pain felt by an entire generation of young Americans – starting with canceling student debt. President Biden has the power to cancel $1.2 trillion of student debt and with the swipe of his pen, he could give a huge boost to our economy and give millions of Americans the ability to start living their dreams.

“We believe addressing the impending climate crisis, grotesque income inequality and a democracy at risk will require courage of conviction and bold policy change. We turned out in 2020 like never before, and we will keep turning out and pushing to solve these problems. At NextGen, we are not hopeless but determined to move our country in a better direction. We aren’t organizing and voting to go back to better days, because we know we have yet to live our best days.”
