WISCONSIN – The Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade – the Supreme Court ruling protecting access to safe and legal abortion, and the inaction taken by Republican Legislators in Wisconsin has criminalized abortion care and forced women to travel out of state to access abortion services. Personal medical decisions about your sexual and reproductive health should be made by you and your doctor, not by politicians in Madison. Wisconsin’s law bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy without exception for rape, incest or the health of the pregnant person. Now more than ever, community is essential. Reaching out into our communities, hearing their concerns, sharing resources, and spreading care for our neighbors in moments of crisis is vital.

This past weekend, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin hosted a #BansOffOurBodies Weekend of Action in Eau Claire. Kicking off the Weekend of Action, PPAWI hosted a Kickoff Party on Friday at 4pm followed by a door-to-door canvass that evening. The weekend continued with community canvasses being held over the afternoons of both Saturday and Sunday. Human rights and bodily autonomy are on the ballot this election season. Now more than ever, it is vital for the rights of Wisconsinites that we elect pro-choice and pro-people candidates. The only way we can overcome this is together, and the turnout at the events of this past Weekend of Action is proof that we are not alone.

Statement from Joella Stribel, Public Affairs Regional Coordinator, PPAWI

“We were excited to engage with voters in Eau Claire ahead of this important midterm election, the first since the overturn of Roe v Wade. We know that the majority of Wisconsinites support access to safe and legal abortion, and that voters on both sides of this issue consider it a priority in this election. While many voters in Wisconsin understand the current legal landscape as it relates to abortion access in Wisconsin, others are confused or misinformed. The power of community engagement and neighbors talking to neighbors about the facts around abortion access cannot be underestimated. Electing candidates who are prochoice champions for reproductive rights is an imperative step on the path to restoring abortion access through legislative action. We have the power, right here in the Chippewa Valley, to elect representatives who will respond to the will of the people they represent and legislate accordingly.”
