Today, Republicans nominated Tim Michels to run against Tony Evers for Governor. This is an important election for the future of abortion access in Wisconsin, as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, giving states the ability to outlaw abortion.
While Governor Evers has called for the legislature to repeal Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban, Tim Michels has stated that the 1849 criminal abortion ban ‘mirrors his position exactly’. Michels proudly opposes any exceptions to Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban for rape or incest. And Michels has openly declared he would go even further and ban emergency contraception.
The Republican gubernatorial nominee Tim Michels is a threat to the reproductive freedom of Wisconsinites. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin has endorsed Tony Evers for Governor.
In addition to the gubernatorial race, Republicans nominated Eric Toney to be their candidate against Attorney General Josh Kaul. Eric Toney poses a further threat to doctors providing reproductive health care in Wisconsin. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin has endorsed Josh Kaul for Attorney General.

It is clear that Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels has no interest in doing what is best for the people. The majority of Wisconsinites believe in the right to safe and legal access to abortion care, while he boldly speaks out in favor of the 1849 criminal abortion ban – aiming to go a step further and ban one of the very resources that prevents unwanted pregnancy. The outdated criminal abortion ban is oppressive, and dervies from a society in which Wisconsin Republicans aim to return to. The communities affected the most are low-income communities of color. We all deserve the freedom to choose if and when we want to start a family. Now that the Supreme Court has made the devastating decision to overturn Roe v Wade, Wisconsinites need our state leaders to take action to protect abortion access including repealing our state’s criminal abortion ban.
