Planned Parenthood Votes in a new digital ad supporting Barnes blasted Johnson for backing the decision that triggered Wisconsin’s pre-Civil War abortion ban.

It is the second ad in Planned Parenthood Votes’ six-figure campaign supporting Barnes’ bid against Johnson. A spokesperson for the abortion rights group said the ad will run statewide as part of a $50 million electoral ad campaign, but declined to provide numbers on the specific buy.

The narrator opens by slamming Johnson, R-Oshkosh, for supporting the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn abortion protections, which put Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban back into effect. That law has effectively outlawed all abortions, the narrator continues.

“Yes, we said 1849,” the narrator says. “That’s before the Civil War, before women could vote, before the invention of cars, antibiotics, even the telephone.”

The ad concludes by touting Barnes as a “champion of reproductive rights.”
