GREEN BAY, WI — This afternoon, Protect Our Care’s Care Force One arrived in Green Bay to highlight how the Inflation Reduction Act’s measures will lower premiums and prescription drug costs for millions of Americans. The groundbreaking legislation works to reduce racial inequities in health care, improve care for seniors, strengthen families, and save lives. During today’s event, speakers explained how the bill lowers premiums for 13 million Americans and will lower prescription drug costs by giving Medicare the power to negotiate for lower drug prices. NE Wisconsin resident Vik Verma recounted his own story and how crucial the Affordable Care Act was in accessing healthcare, as well as how much the advanced premium tax credits first passed into law under the American Rescue Plan, and extended under the Inflation Reduction Act, have meant to him. “Thankfully, because of the Inflation Reduction Act, the enhanced subsidies that I benefit from have now been extended for another 3 years,” said Verma. “I am so grateful that those in similar situations as I found myself in will be able to receive these benefits. The relief and peace of mind they provide cannot be overstated.”
Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an OBGYN, recounted how the Affordable Care Act has benefitted women, and spoke movingly about what the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade has meant for Wisconsin women. “Abortion is health care – it’s not this binary choice that politicians want you to make. Abortion care is part of the spectrum of pregnancy care – from fertility treatment, to miscarriage management, to caring for women with complicated pregnancies. Abortion care is fundamental health care, and it is not avaiable to women in Wisconsin right now.” Dr. Lyerly described the effects of the criminal ban on abortion as “chilling,” and not just for those seeking abortion care.
“As governor, I’ve been committed to expanding healthcare access in Wisconsin and ensuring every Wisconsinite receives affordable and high-quality care — especially for the nearly 2.4 million people who live with a pre-existing condition in our state,” said Governor Evers. “We need leaders at every level of government who will protect every person’s basic human right to make their own medical decisions. I have been a brick wall against Republicans’ war on healthcare and reproductive freedom at the state level.”
