MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize Madison Fire Chief Steven Davis as a “Hometown Hero” at the upcoming Assembly session on January 20th.
Davis, who was nominated by his state representative, Samba Baldeh (D-Madison), has spent the last three decades as a member of the City of Madison’s Fire Department and has served as the department’s fire chief since 2012. Davis recently announced that he will be retiring this April.
Davis’ tenure as chief has been marked by growth and innovation. Under his guidance, the Madison Fire Department has added two new fire stations and expanded emergency medical services to several neighboring municipalities.
In 2016, Davis launched the Mobile Integrated Health Program. The partnership between the department, local hospitals, and social services, sends paramedics to conduct home health care visits with at-risk individuals, reducing their dependence on emergency medical services.
Under Davis’ leadership, MFD established the department’s C.A.R.E.S Team, an initiative designed to provide an alternative emergency response for individuals who are experiencing a medical or behavioral healthcare crisis.
Davis’ management also led to Madison becoming a leader in environmentally friendly firefighting technologies. Under Davis, the department became the first major city in Wisconsin to use PFAS-free firefighting foam, and put into service the nation’s first 100%- electric fire engine.
“Madison was fortunate to have had a Fire Chief with such vision and dedication to his work and our community. His work puts the department and the safety of the city on solid footing for years to come,” said Baldeh, who worked with Chief Davis during his time as President of Madison’s Common council.
The Wisconsin State Assembly created the Hometown Heroes program to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who have made an outstanding contribution to the betterment of their communities. Award winners are invited to the State Capitol and given an opportunity to speak on the Assembly floor as a special guest.
