MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court came to a 4-3 decision regarding the redistricting case, ruling in favor of Governor Evers’ proposed maps.

Representative Samba Baldeh (D-48) released the following statement in regard to the decision of the Wisconsin Supreme Court:

“Although the decision of the Wisconsin Supreme Court is favorable to the prospect of my re-election, I believe that the underlying reasons for the decision are wrong.

First, the decision affirms the illegitimate and undemocratic maps drawn by the GOP in 2010. The “Evers” map includes a few modifications, but it is basically cut from the same cloth.

Second, the decision further legitimizes the practice of politicians drawing maps that suit the interests of the majority. We must create a non-partisan commission to draw legislative maps.

I am pleased that the court rejected the maps proposed by the GOP that would have created an even more unrepresentative legislative majority. Governor Evers’ proposed maps represent a step in the right direction given the restrictions imposed by the Court. Because of the current and potentially, future, legislative map, the Republican-led legislature has had no incentive or interest in addressing the issues supported by the majority of Wisconsinites.

The state’s laws, policies, and programs will not reflect the interests of the people until we have fair and representative maps created by a non-partisan and impartial body.”
