MILWAUKEE – In reaction to the senseless shooting incident yesterday afternoon at the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 building, where a local suspect entered the lobby of the building and began shooting at MPD staff and community members, State Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:

“I completely denounce the senseless act of violence that happened inside Police District 5, which I represent in the State Assembly. Many times, local residents and community members seek out our police stations in times of urgent need, and for a gunman to go and open fire on officers and citizens is a deplorable act.”

Yesterday afternoon, a 23-year-old Milwaukee man entered the MPD District 5 building around 3pm and began firing, endangering staff, officers, and community members who were present in the building at the time. After the suspect began shooting, an MPD officer returned fire and the suspect fled on foot. Multiple officers followed the suspect out of the building, returned fire, and the suspect suffered non-lethal injuries. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and the suspect is in custody.

“My heart goes out to the station’s staff and neighborhood residents who suffered trauma but nonetheless stand resilient as the suspect was apprehended. I’d like to thank all of those who helped remedy this situation, and am particularly grateful for the critical leadership of Chief Jeffrey Norman at a tough time like this.”
